Living segregated lives: Exploring changes in spatial inequalities in digitally transforming societies
The overarching goal of the new five-year research project is to enhance our understanding of the changes in the spatial structures of inequality in digitally transforming societies by focusing on changes in residential segregation. Research on residential segregation has reached a turning point. It needs new perspectives and approaches since an important share of activities has shifted to the digital space, which in turn brings along changes in the physical space. The residential preferences of high-skilled professionals are critical in shaping patterns of residential segregation, but how these preferences change during digital transition is unclear. The proposed project will address this research gap based. It applies a comprehensive mixed method research design that will draw on qualitative interviews and longitudinal harmonized microdata from censuses and registers, enriched by variables characterizing digital transition such as remote working.
